This lamp is entirely made of olive wood. Olive wood grain is unique. It is very irregular and I always thought that it looks like a weird spill of oil in fact. The grain direction behaves as if it was bent by the wind or pulled by gravity or just unable to grow straight for some uncontrollable and beautiful rule of nature. The downside, for me, when working, is that olive wood is really hard to work with. Saw it, and it will burn its surface. Plane it, and it will tear. Drum sand it, and it will get burnished.
In order to make an object that requires a high degree of precision and a nice, clean finish of the wood, I have to go through a lot of trouble. The good thing is that the result is stunning!
Inspiration for this lamp came from Leonardo Da Vinci’s drawing of the Archimedean solid truncated icosahedron. Hence the name ‘Atlante’, as a homage to the famous renaissance genius and his studies such as ‘Codice Atlantico’. The truncated icosahedron is actually an all too famous solid as it is the shape of the soccer ball.
